The Australian South Asian Society has been active for many years, bringing together people from across the South Asian community, strengthening multicultural connections, and fostering community leadership. I have had the privilege of serving as President for nearly two consecutive years.
Over the past year, we successfully organised three significant events.
Our ‘Multicultural Night at Mulgrave Community Hall’ celebrated our community’s rich cultural diversity and talent. The event drew a strong turnout of local residents, performers, community representatives, and political leaders, reflecting the wider community’s support for multiculturalism. It also recognised Mr Bandu Dissanayake as South Asian of the Year.
Our second major initiative was a ‘’ fundraising event supporting Sri Lankan flood relief” We organised a full day of food distribution and community activities, with almost 1,000 people participating. Through the generosity of our community, we raised approximately **$13,000**, of which **$8,000 was donated immediately to flood-relief efforts**.
At another ‘’ multicultural event held at Oakleigh Hall’’, we organised a community function and presented a further **$5,000 donation to the Sri Lankan Consulate** in support of the relief effort.
We also commemorated the life of our friend, Mr. Jude Perera, a Victorian MP for 16 years, who passed away a year ago, surrounded by his family and friends.
Beyond organising events and raising funds, the Australian South Asian Society has an important role in bringing together and representing the broader South Asian diaspora. We are proud to uphold this responsibility and to provide a platform where people from different South Asian backgrounds can meet, cooperate, and contribute to the wider Australian community.
However, the future of any community organisation depends on the next generation. It is therefore essential that we encourage younger South Australians to become involved, take on leadership responsibilities, and bring new ideas and energy to the Society.
As I reflect on nearly two years as President, I am grateful to our committee members, volunteers, supporters, community organisations, and everyone who has contributed their time and effort. Our achievements have been collective.
I hope the Australian South Asian Society will continue to grow as an inclusive organisation, and that a new generation of leaders will carry its work forward with renewed enthusiasm and commitment.
