Shiamala Nadesan Cancer Welfare Foundation had his inaugural meeting on 28th February 2023 at Earl’s Regent Hotel, Kandy. It was attended by thirty invitees including university academics, Deans of the faculties of University of Peradeniya, Consultant Oncologists and Onco-surgeons, health counselors, journalists and well-wishers. A website (https://www.cancerwelfarelanka.com/) dedicated for this foundation was also launched on the same day.
Dr. Shiamala Nadesan Cancer Welfare Foundation is a charity and its purpose is to:
- Advance the health of people in Sri Lanka by providing support to individuals in the grassroot level to pay for cancer treatment services;
- Funding medical centers for the diagnosis, treatment and management of cancer patients;
- Providing community health services focused on the needs of the community, such as mobile screening for cancer, counselling etc.;
- Providing patient transport services to and from public medical centres where necessary to enable patients to access healthcare;
- Undertaking research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and/or management of cancer and publishing the results of that research;
- Providing training for medical professionals regarding the most recent developments in best practices for diagnosing, treating, and/or managing illness;
- Purchase diagnostic and treatment equipment for hospitals and medical centers.
The foundation has a bank account at DFCC Bank Peradeniya, opened on 27th February 2023 and Dr. Noel Nadesan credited a sum of LKR 1,500,000.00 initially. Thereafter, the well wishers deposited a sum of LKR 684,655.92.
The foundation helped 18 individuals affected with cancers ( oral, ovarian, breast, pancreatic, cervical carcinomas and sarcomas) to date, through this foundation. Needy individuals are selected based on requests made by medical officers, nurses, other organisations, patients themselves and their relatives, upon screening the medical records.The breakdown of the beneficiaries are as follows:
Oral cancer patients-7
Ovarian cancer patients-4
Breast cancer patients-2
Sarcoma patients-2
Oesophageal cancer patient-1
Pancreatic cancer patient-1
Cervical cancer patient-1
The total amount contributed to these needy individuals is LKR 290,112/= to purchase medicines & nutritional supplements, travelling, and for investigations.
